New Kowloon Concept Art

Piece 1: New Kowloon at Sunset

NFT Showroom Link.

The Los Angeles haze and the Southern California sunset collide above New Kowloon. Soon after the original Kowloon was demolished in 1994, this one materialized wedded to Dodger Stadium. After the quarantine zone was established the settlement grew like wildfire as the poor and politically unstable moved to the near autonomous zone. Like the original Kowloon, ramshackle tower blocks are constructed of both new and found materials. The interior zones are as dingy and cramped as the original’s. Planning is ad hoc and social services are all provided by either Los Angeles’s largess or mutual aid groups. Also like the original Kowloon, LA residents become dependent on the cheap and illegal services the zone provides. Unlike the original, it serves as an entry point for The Tear to terrorize the people of Los Angeles.

This artwork was created with the help of Artificial Intelligence. Create your own AI-generated artworks using NightCafe Creator and I’m loving it. Using AI, I can generate art that is specific enough to inspire the imagination and communicate the more difficult concepts of the world at an affordable price.

Creating concept art is typically expensive, running hundreds of dollars a day, even thousands for a single days work with an artist. With AI, I can do it for pennies on the dollar and get stunning results.

The Tree of Metanoia

A non-terrestrial tree made manifest by The Tear. It is an organism that compels emotional, psychological and / or physical transformations. Created by Phil Abatecola.

The Tear is moving into NFTs! With “The Tree of Metanoia”, I’m working on building out The Tear’s world using Generative Artificial Intelligence and minting the art on NFT Showroom. One of the problems with conceiving of an entirely fictional, cosmic horror universe is that it costs a lot of money to pay for artists to realize it before the long process of filmmaking has begun. Thanks to Generative AI, I can move forward for pennies on the dollar while still creating stunning art.

I will be expanding the universe one piece of art at a time along with stories and descriptions of the art and how it relates to The Tear’s universe from here on out.

I’m working on a full blogpost and video that will explain everything further in a couple of days, but in the meantime, what do you think?

Welcome to The Tear!

The Tear began as a short film – delayed due to COVID – and has grown into a much bigger idea that we would like to expand on here on Patreon.  As we continue to push forward with the short film, we will be producing and sharing with you original music, tales and art from that process.

We will also expand the universe with the additional stories and related material first here and on Hive.

Until then, here are some Tear links to explore:

In The Shadow of a God

Phil under the Tear's shadow.

#TheTear makes everything harder. More chaotic. In the city the danger is the number of people. In the suburbs the danger is too few and there are a lot of weird chirping noises at night here. I started making this film to cope with the insanity of the world. Maybe if I fictionalized The Tear I could in some microscopic way control it. The film moves forward as The Tear draws closer. The noises at night grow more numerous. Neighbors say to not go out too late at night. I now realize that I have to document life under the Tear as I make the short. The Internet is also affected. I think these accounts reach beyond this reality and into a place that isn’t tortured by Rozdzerack.

Making The Tear’s Nightmare Noise Box

Happy New Year, Everyone!

Let’s start 2022 off with a new video for The Tear! It took a while to complete, but the video is now done, and I can share with you our sound design monster, The Nightmare Box!

As a big fan of the Apprehension Engine for horror film sound design, I wanted create something similar for The Tear to create the alien soundscape of the universe. At less than a 1/10th the cost of the actual Apprehension Engine, our Nightmare Box does a great job creating sounds that make the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

Paired with my Behringer Neutron’s the low drone, the box provides The Tear’s world with an endless canvas of eerie sounds and experimentation, perfect for a world as chaotic and nightmarish as The Tear.

The noise box was hand made by my wife and I. Each step is detailed with text on the screen.

The Tear’s Crowdfund Sizzle Inches Closer to Completion

A screenshot of Adobe After Effects rendering The Tear.

Some of the final Tear Crowdfund VFX shots are nearing completion.  Here we get to see Earth in relation to The Tear.  Keep in mind the cosmic god is a few billion miles away.  All these effects are home grown.  I’m sticking to these wide shot animations.  Once we get the short film rolling I’ll be working with a skilled animator / VFX artist to complete the more ambitious shots.

Going to record the wild lines and start shooting the remaining b-roll.  If you’re interested in cosmic horror and want to see the short and other stories take shape, consider subscribing or share this post.
